Since becoming a Catholic two years ago I've tried to very thoughtfully consider my Lenten intentions. The first year I didn't give anything up, but rather learned to pray the rosary.
This year, I've decided that to honor the true purpose of giving something up to become closer to God and prepare my heart for Easter I'm giving up social networking. And, here's why:
I feel drawn to check in on what's going on with my Twitter friends or my Facebook friends. This happens when I have down time or just a few minutes that I find myself bored. When, in truth, I have so much in my heart that I often mean to be praying for but don't quite articulate my thoughts the way I'd like.
I find myself composing a tweet when something funny happens or something makes me unhappy and then I'll complain. So, instead of posting, I'm going to pray. And they might be minute prayers or longer composed thoughts that I can lift up, but I need to work on how much I'm drawn to these superfluous earthly moments and focus instead on how much I have to be grateful and thankful for.
And, my sincere hope is that when Easter arrives that I'll be much less inclined to care what's being posted by others and that I'll be more in tune to my faith and my family.
Do you observe Lent? What are you focusing on this year?

I will miss your tweets! However, I think it is a noble thing to give up for Lent. I admire you!
While I will miss your tweets, I get it. Just don't give up blogging, right? :-)

This is a really good idea! Good for you! I am giving up bread this year. I will definitely notice that (which is, of course, the point).

I have a friend that is planning on praying the rosary daily during Lent and I think that is an excellent idea. I am giving up Facebook and working on being a better and more devout church goer! As for the shamrocks, I got them at Tom Thumb on Inwood Ave. Have a great weekend!
Oh, I'm sad....I don't want you to give up twitter - its my quick catch up on what you are doing....ok, this makes me sad.
