It was November 10, 2007. (Isn't is funny how girls can always remember this date? If I were to ask my husband what the date was he would just give me a blank look...)
I had been in Miami for the week prior work at a conference. Several months earlier we had decided to have him fly out and spend the weekend in South Beach. We found a cute little boutique hotel and made some dinner reservations.
Now, to know my husband is to know that he
As luck would have it, I came down with a migraine on Saturday afternoon. After showering I layed down to try and let it pass. It wasn't working. Finally about six o'clock (our reservation was at seven I think) I pulled myself together and put on my dress to go to dinner. I had no makeup on and let my hair air dry so it was nice and wavy. I was not looking my best.
We went to dinner at Wish which is in The Hotel. When we arrived the maitre 'd was very friendly and even pronounced our name right (it's Cajun French and everyone says it wrong outside of Louisiana).
(The spire on top of the hotel.)
As we're going up the elevator he asked if we wanted to see the pool deck or the bar first. Thinking we would have a drink at the bar I said the pool. So, we walk out to the pool deck. that overlooks the ocean, and there's nobody out there.
I kept walking towards a table and noticed there were candles and champagne and strawberries. I turned to my then boyfriend and said, "what is all this for?" clearly still clueless. Then he got down on one knee and popped the question!
Of course I said yes, but I was honestly in shock. I was not expecting it at all.
He set everything up himself. He had called ahead to set up the champagne and candles and to reserve the pool deck, he double checked with the maitre 'd the night before (hence the friendly banter since they had met!), and he had picked out the ring. (He did have a bit of help with the ring as far as sizing, but he picked out the stone, an Asscher cut, because he knew I would want something a little bit different. In fact, the only discussion we had about rings to that point was the I wanted quality over quantity and he wholeheartedly agreed. )
And, because I love you all so much I'm going to show you a photo of us from that night. Me with no makeup and all!
And, the rest is history!
