You all, it's official- I'm a registry snob! If you invite me to a shower or a wedding, I will judge you by your registry items.
I will not purchase a wedding gift for someone knowing it won't last until at least their 5th anniversary. I just cannot do it.
I think that if you are older than 25 you are too old to register for things made of plastic. And sheet sets. I mean, how many times in your life are people wanting to buy really nice things for you? Help them out! Pick out beautiful things that will last longer than the Honeymoon phase.
I know I cannot be the only one who feels this way, right?
We have several weddings this Spring and shopping for some has admittedly been more fun than shopping for others. I loved one registry in particular. It was hard to decide what to get them since I had so many lovely things to select from. Others, it's hard to choose what to get them since there are so few things of actual value. Or, the things in a price range we normally purchase in are things like vacuums and irons. Um, no, I'm not giving you an appliance as a wedding gift. It's not memorable.
Maybe it's just me. Do any of you have registry requirements?

Personally I hate people who think it's okay to find something "memorable" as opposed to something the couple could really use. Like the appliances you mentioned, a lot of newlyweds (myself included) just don't have the money to cover the costs of those things and this is the only way they can afford them. Plus, it's not about what you want, it's about what they want.
It's not the wedding registries that I'm taking exception with so far this year. It's the baby registries! Holy smokes! I just got invited to another baby shower and perused the registry online yesterday. Not one solitary thing on that sucker was under a hundred dollars. The couple decided to register for the premium items and not put stuff like diapers, burp clothes and binkies on the registry! Rant done! Sorry. :-)
I just have to say I love this post! My thoughts exactly. I love that you say register for plastic - truly! Don't go for the plastic kitchen tools, register for stainless and metal! If people don't get it for you, then buy the plastic yourself!
