I was not one of those brides who wanted a big dress and who wanted to feel like a princess. I only knew I was getting married in August in Texas and that it would be HOT. Everything was inside, but for anyone who lives here you know just going from a building to your car can make you break a sweat.
So, everyone had told me to go to Mockingbird Bridal in Dallas. I wanted to go when my (then future) Mother-in-law was in town since she only had one boy and I thought she would enjoy it. I made the appointment for the day after Christmas. (Turns out that's when they put all their samples on sale. )So me, my mom and MIL headed to Dallas for the day.
When we arrived our consultant greeted us and started asking about what I'd like to see and how I had pictured my wedding gown. (I love that they use the word gown. Sounds so elegant, yes?) Again not really having any ideas what I wanted I just listed off what I didn't want. No beads, no lace, no puffy skirt, nothing that needed a petticoat, a natural fabric and oh yeah, I was wearing my MIL's antique veil and the dress needed to coordinate with it. I was also pretty certain I would not get a strapless dress as I'm small on top and didn't want to be tugging at a dress on my wedding day.
So, we gathered up some dresses and I went off to try them. I liked a few of them okay and was thinking I had found one. Again, I wasn't very picky. I mostly wanted to be comfortable. Well, after reluctantly trying on my dress I ended up choosing I really liked it. It fit really great and was very elegant and very much "me".
It just so happened that the dress I ended up liking the best was a sample and it was on sale for a great deal. (If it had been full retail I never would have put it on!) Being a sample it was in my size and ended up needing no alterations other than a bustle. Even the length was perfect! (I will say for those of you who may be looking for dresses, it was very dirty being a sample and I was a little concerned it would get clean as new. It did, the cleaners were awesome.)It was silk in a natural color, not pure white, but not ivory. It has this beautiful wrapping around the bodice that I loved. (The bridesmaid dresses had a similar detail on their dresses as well. Loved it!)
Here's one of my favorite photos from the day:
