A common misconception

OK, ladies, I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions about short hairstyles. I keep getting comments about how easy my hair must be, mainly from new moms or soon to be moms, and I think I should do them all a service. Here goes:

Very short hair is not low maintenance.

There, I said it. Some of you might disagree with me, but it's not been my experience that short hair is easier than medium or long hair. And, I think there's this broad idea that it is.

While I just got another trim tonight this is the most recent picture I'm willing to post on the interwebs...

Allow me to give you some reasons why:
- I need an actual haircut every four weeks.
- I normally get a slight trim (some weight taken out and thinning) every two weeks.
- There's no ponytail option for days I don't want to do my hair
- To actually style my hair I generally need to shampoo it first

Yes, my hair takes less time to style when it's this short, but overall it does cost more and requires more attention.

For posterity's sake, I've added some pics of my hair through the years so you can trust I know what I'm talking about.

***Be warned what you will see first is quite shocking...I was in high school, I didn't know any better...***

College graduation with my two grandmothers

My sister and I on her birthday one year (likely ten years ago).

With my niece and sister in 2005(?) sporting a ponytail

Christmas last year

So, while this is of course only my opinion, I feel that a lot of women cut their hair short thinking it will save them time and/or money. And, while I love my hair short I often feel bad when new moms are envious thinking a short style is easier. That's all. Thanks for listening to my rant. :)

I agree... short hair is easier to style, but ultimately takes just as long (or longer) and requires more upkeep. :-) I keep saying that I'm going to let my hair grow so I don't have to visit the hairdresser so often. Hasn't happened yet!

Gosh, you have beautiful hair! My hair (which is about chin-length) is driving me CRAZY right now and I can't even stick it in a ponytail to take a break from the fight with styling it. I totally agree!

I hadn't thought about it, but what you said makes perfect sense to me!

I totally agree - I thought mine would be easier shorter, and its not! The only thing time consuming about my old haircut was that it took longer to dry - which in hindsight wasn't that bad :)
