Tuesday, we headed up to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It must be said I’m somewhat of an outdoors snob. I’ve been to the Canyon a few times now and have always thought the North Rim was prettier. It’s more remote and only 1 out of 10 visitors make it to the North Rim. Granted there aren’t as many places to stay or eat and not as many trails, but gorgeous. Maybe the reason I think it’s prettier is because it’s not as developed.
So, without further ado, a few of my favorite North Rim pictures. (Yes, it was quite cold at the end of May. Hence the sweaters and vests.)
Tuesday night we got there about 5pm and wanted to try and get something in. we were told to go out to Cape Royal for a great sunset. It took 45 minutes each way and yes, it was beautiful. But, it was also really, freaking cold and windy out there!
Wednesday morning, Husband wanted to hike down into the Canyon and let’s just say wife has bad knees. He knows this, I used to dance, play soccer, hike back in my youth, but now, I prefer flat surfaces to steep trails. Well, I gave it my best Girl Scout effort and we hiked down 2.4 miles and back 2.4 miles. We probably went down in elevation about 1200 feet. This trail, the North Kaibab (pronounced Ky-Bab, not Ca-bob like my husband kept saying) is rated as strenuous. Let’s just say I earned the Snickers and regular lay’s I had at lunch when we got finished. I thought I was going to die y’all!
Wednesday evening after napping for a bit we drove out to Point Imperial, which is the highest point at the Grand Canyon on either rim. The view was stunning!
We spent Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the North Rim and on Thursday had a trip scheduled to raft down the Colorado River in Glen Canyon. It was really hot down in the canyon but the water was still 48 degrees. Brrr! Luckily, we only got a few splashes and weren’t in the water.
Thursday night we stayed at the South Rim and got there quite late so we had to drive in the dark in the rain. So, it was up early for us on Friday to get some South Rim time in before heading out.
Friday around lunch time we met up with our fabulous friends Brittney and Jeremy in Sedona. And, judging by the comments I already received about Sedona, I’m going to make that Part Three to give you more details. But, there’s a good story coming.
