Last Saturday we headed to the airport very early to head to sunny Arizona. We flew on miles (a perk of hubs business travel) and were quite limited on our options to get to and from Phoenix. We landed at 7am MST time and obviously couldn't check in yet. So, we went to get our rental and drove around to check out the place. We stayed in Scottsdale at the Firesky Report. It was beautiful. A little bit crowded since it was Memorial Day weekend and it's common for the locals to come out to play for a few days. I'd show you a photo, but we didn't really take any at the hotel. So, onto the fun stuff we did...
Saturday, we went to the Desert Botanical Garden. I'd read about it in my guidebook and thought it looked interesting. What we didn't know was Dale Chihuly had an exhibit going on and it was so good. All of the sculptures are made of glass. If you've ever been to the Bellagio in Vegas you've seen his work.
We took this picture inside one of the huts at the gardens. (Gotta love the party pic!)
We went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant that was recommended to us and let me just say as a native Texan and a transplant who loves food it was underwhelming. The margaritas however were awesome!
Sunday, we headed North to the Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's Winter home in Scottsdale. It was so interesting to learn more about him as an artist and architect. He's always been one of my favorites and to see the home he built and lived in was pretty cool to me.
Monday, we went to Chase Field to the Diamondbacks game. They played the Padres and we didn't really know who to cheer for. So, we joined in and went for the D'backs. We didn't take any pictures, but after the game we did head to the Winter home of the Chicago Cubs, Hohokam Park. My husband is a huge Cubs fan and even got me a Cubs t-shirt while we were gone. (We saw a cute one in a sports store when we were looking for U of A shirts. It's kind of becoming a tradition of ours after we got U of Oregon shirts on our honeymoon.)
Monday night we went to a fabulous dinner at the Royal Palms Resort at their restaurant called T. Cook's. It was so delicious. If my husband is good at anything it's picking out great restaurants. We walked around the resort after dinner and liked it so much we decided to stay on our last night of vacation. (Check out the website, it was fabulous!)
Stay tuned for part two...
